The last few weeks have been full of surprises for Kanye West fans. After statements supportive of Donald Trump, West has stunned the public with ever more provocative statements on social media, in interviews, and in his music. His latest firestorm erupted after West told TMZ that “slavery was a choice.” He said: “When you hear about slavery for 400 years, that sounds like a choice.” TMZ’s Van Lathan immediately called him out, saying that his comments carried real consequences and that he was personally hurt by the change he sees in West. Social media users aren’t quite sure how they feel, however. Although most decry West’s slavery comments, with 53 percent negative opinions on Kanye’s Twitter handle, there’s a sizable minority online inclined to agree. Many users are thanking West for the comments and saying he’s right, with 47 percent of opinions positive. –Hugo Guzman
