Want To Get Out Of The Rat Race? Read These Nine Books

From a young age, most of us have been taught one simple rule – work hard. Parents say it.

Teachers say it. Bosses say it.

If working hard was the key to success, we’d have a lot of successful people because I know an awful lot of people willing to burn the midnight oil.

There’s just one problem with that advice. If working hard was the key to success, we’d have a lot of successful people because I know an awful lot of people willing to burn the midnight oil.

Sadly, many people end up with a job they don’t really like, struggling to make ends meet, praying things will change.

Clearly something is missing, but what is it?

After years of study and coaching people, I came to the conclusion that the answer is knowledge.

As a time management expert, I realize that knowing how to do something better, faster and more accurately means you can get more out of what time we have.

In essence what you are doing is making each hour more valuable to you, to your clients, and to your family.

The sooner you’re able to get out of the rat race, you’ll be able to do what it is you want to do and the best place to get started is with the following nine books. So pour yourself a cup of coffee (or some orange juice), grab yourself a pen and some paper and write down every idea you come across.

1.Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

The book that helped so many entrepreneurs, myself included, change how they view business and money and in the process change their lives. Will Smith even had his own son read it when he was nine. That says something.

2.The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy

It may be the shortest book on the list, but it’s good! It focuses on one simple idea: that working on something little by little can achieve incredible results. You’ll be surprised at how easy and straightforward the ideas are, yet incredibly powerful. If you could read just one book on this list to change your life, I’d say this would have to be it.

3.The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

The longest book on the list, but one that has earned its place in any business person’s library. 20 years being a top ten best-selling business book will do that.

4.How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie

While this book may have been written more to help people succeed in business, it’s principles apply at home and with friends equally well. A book I know that has personally saved more than a few marriages.

5.The Difference Maker by John Maxwell

John Maxwell is a prolific writer. He has published more than 30 books, many deserving a mention. Talent Is Not Enough is my personal favorite, but I actually recommend people start off with this little book. A short, easy, thought provoking read and one that will likely lead to you picking up more of his books.

6.He Can Who Thinks He Can by Orison Swett Marden

Written way back in 1908, most people might think this book is outdated. That would be a mistake. I first learned about this book from the master salesman, Jeffrey Gitomer, who has written over 20 best-selling books. Reading it blew me away. Aside from a few references of an age long forgotten, it feels as if it could have been written in 2017. My favorite book on this list.

7.The Success Principles by Jack Canfield

Clearly something is missing, but what is it? After years of study and coaching people, I came to the conclusion that the answer is knowledge… In essence what you are doing is making each hour more valuable to you, to your clients, and to your family.

Some people call this the modern day version of Napoleon Hill’s Think And Grow Rich. It’s the longest book here, but surprisingly easy to read so you won’t notice its length. In many ways it combines all of the books here into one.

8.The Magic Of Thinking Big by David Schwartz

This is one of those books that appears on so many personal development lists, and for good reason. A tad repetitive maybe, and a bit dated, but it contains lots of “Aha!” moments. One of the best books here that goes into mindset necessary to succeed.

9.AskGaryVee by Gary Vaynerchuk

You could go with Gary Vee’s first book, Crush It, or his most strategic, Jab Jab Jab Right Hook, but I decided to go with his most recent in which he shares his answers to questions people have asked him on his show. As it’s the newest he pulls from all his previous books and offers some of the most useful, direct advice.

There you have it. Nine books that can and will transform how you approach business and live your life. If you’re looking to get out of the 9 to 5 trap (aka a job), these books are a great place to start.
