In 1992 I sent out 1,246 resumes in search of employment.
I received 239 callbacks and went on 56 interviews. Once, I spent an hour on a phone interview, only to have my interviewer exclaim upon showing up for the in-person interview, “Oh my god. I had no idea you were black.”

I was literally the only black make in the entire building who wasn’t working in the mailroom or at the security desk. Anne Robbins was the first person to really give me a chance; to look beyond any superficial differences and see my ability. I don’t think she was trying to be enlightened; she just saw me as a person, not a profile.
