Finding Concentration and Flow

“Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.”

―Paulo Coelho

Now that it is almost March, resolutions have slowed down, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s important. What makes many people never get to where they want to be? Why does it seem to be challenging to get into a flow? It’s because it is increasingly difficult to concentrate. Concentration comes when we willingly focus. Focusing can certainly come to us naturally when we’re doing what we want. However, what do we do when something needs to get done, but it’s not our favorite thing? It’s time to stop and entirely concentrate on the task at hand. Set aside about 30 minutes and decide to get the item done.

Not only does it get what is needed to be done, but it feels so good to accomplish a task too.

“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

―Edward Everett Hale

When experiencing the simplicity of flow, you will see how easy concentrating can be. The ease of becoming distracted is also simple. It is both simple to get distracted and straightforward to stay focused. The secret is to stay focused for that short period, at least. The motivation that follows carries the energy into the next phase—and flow is born.

“Great things are done when men and mountains meet.”

―William Blake

Whatever it is, distractions are always there. It’s important to see what’s a distraction and what is essential. The key is to recognize them and become the one in control to shut down your distracting mind—if even for that specific period. Knowing that distractions (or resistance) will always be there is the first step in moving beyond them. No, it’s not easy. But, who doesn’t want to be in flow? Flow feels good. And with enough mastery over your methods, you can always feel that good.

“Bring the mind into sharp focus and make it alert so that it can immediately intuit truth, which is everywhere. The mind must be emancipated from old habits, prejudices, restrictive thought processes and even ordinary thought itself.”

―Bruce Lee, Tao of Jeet Kune Do
